Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim is to explore the feasibility of using a new method of scanning laser vibration measurement in order to detect structural defects. Defects affect vibration properties of structures but are currently difficult to detect because they are very localised and thus need extensive instrumentation. Scanning lasers now make extremely dense measurements very rapidly can thus provide the necessary detailed data. The research will include instrumentation of simple structures and development of new methods for defect detection: methods which could be used for inspection monitoring in various critical applications ranging from machinery to large structures such as bridges.
