This project builds on previous research at UKC into a distributed fibre sensor which has a sensing range 50 km combioned with a spatial resolution of 2-3 metres, despite the fact that it was implemented in a non ideal format with standard commercial components.The main aims of the project are to demonstrate a generic distributed sensor with 1) A sensing range well in excess of 200 km, 2) An inherent auto-calibrating facility with the measurement accuracy immune from drift in the laser frequency, 3) Data recovered using modest bandwidth electronics (500MHz bandwidth rather than 10 GHz bandwidth of previous approach), 4) Single-ended operation to increase the applicability of the system, 5) To improve both the temperature, strain and spatial resolution and methods to uniquely separate these parameters, 6) To undertake preliminary studies on applications for the system in temperature monitoring.The main feature of this work is the development of a source based on stimulated Brillouin scattering that will replace one of the two lasers required in our previous system and simultaneously bring about the benefits listed in 2) and 3) above.
