Summary on Grant Application Form |
A wide range of experiments is proposed for the study of excitation and ionisation of gas-phase atoms and molecules using photon and electron impact. This involves both dynamical and spectroscopic studies, which will go hand in hand with the development of new instruments and techniques. A new range of photo-double-ionisation studies will be carried out using the Daresbury Laboratory Synchrotron Radiation Source, and photo-triple ionisation studies will be added. A new 'magnetic angle-changing' technique that we have recently invented will be applied to a wide range of photo-ionisation and electron scattering experiments. We will use laser probing to study electron impact excitation to well defined final states. Studies of collisions with excited targets will be carried our using a recently developed metastable atom source. In conventional electron impact excitation and ionisation studies we will carry out state-of-the-art experiments using high resolution and computer-aided optimisation. Finally we will continue with our long-standing tradition of work on instrumentation development.
