Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will explore the dramatic world of interfacial phase transitions known as the physics of wetting. Well-developed theory has shown that the everyday world of adsorption and capilliary hides a variety of first-order interfacial transitions and interfacial critical phenomena. We will study these effects via the use of self-assembled mixed-monolayer substrates, unique surfaces that give precise control over the wetting field. The project should be the first to achieve reproducible thermodynamic control, near to room-temperature, over the thickness and structure of liquid films adsorbed at solid substrates.
