Summary on Grant Application Form |
The investigation to be carried out by Professor Kohnke will involve the synthesis, structural characterisation and ring-opening polymerisation of macrocyclic aromatic sulfones, ketones and esters. Synthetic techniques will include not only the established approach to macrocycle synthesis of chain-growth and ring-closure but also the novel approach of ring-closing depolymerisation of high molecular weight aromatic polyethers. Although polymerisation studies may be carried out on materials containing cyclic oligomers with a range of molecular weights, individual cyclic oligomers are also to be isolated by fractional crystallisation or chromatography (HPLC and GPC) for more detailed characterisation. Single crystal studies of such oligomers should provide the first experimental evidence for the molecular structures of chain-folds in lamellar crystallites of aromatic polymers.
