Electron beam (EB) PVD methods are the most widespread PVD techniques in industrial use, but they have received comparatively little research attention. In particular, their use for alloy and multiphase coatings needs research attention which is the aim of this project. The research will address the use of multiple source EB systems and the process monitoring and control systems necessary to ensure satisfactory and repeatable coatings. Techniques of monitoring will include optical emission spectroscopy and electrostatic probes. Models will be developed for species distribution in the deposition chamber. Also quality assessment procedures will be developed.
