Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is aimed at improving the flame retardant properties of textile fabrics by innovative chemical treatment, with particular emphasis on upholstery, furnishing and barrier textiles for use in domestic, contract, transport and other environments. Novel treatments and applications of new flame retardant chemicals will be investigated to improve the distribution of such chemicals on the surface of a range of fibres and fabric structures. The chemical species selected for this study are those based on phosphorous but additions of new antimony-halogen retardant systems may be required on certain synthetic fibre in the fabrics e.g. acrylics, polyesters and blends with other fibres. The innovative chemical investigations will be conducted by two HEI's, Bolton Institute and Huddersfield University, and the project will be led by an SME manufacturer of upholstery fabrics. Four other industrial sponsors covering the whole range from chemical supplier to fabric finisher will provide their facilities for the work.
