Fundamental work carried out in a BRITE-EURAM project has demonstrated that by making additions to the formulation of zinc electroplating solutions and by controlling the plating parameters it is possible to influence not only the crystalline structure of the deposits, but also to incorporate specific species into a thin oxide film on the surface of each crystal. The original work was designed to replace brass coatings on steel cord used in automobile tyre manufacture with zinc alloy coatings. The improved zinc microstructure gave greater drawability properties; the proposed project aims to enhance the corrosion resistant properties of the zinc by doping the oxide layer with trivalent ions. It is also proposed to modify the oxide in such a way that it will directly bond to applied organic coatings.In consequence of the above, this project is supported by industrial organisations with two separate exploitation interests: (a) continuos plating of sheet steel for use in the manufacture of painted car bodies; (b) batch plating of parts with a bright zinc finish. In both application areas, there is major interest in avoiding post-plating passivation processes and reducing the thickness of zinc required to protect the steel substrates.
