Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the field of vehicle aerodynamics the greatest concern relate to the airflow over the rear surfaces of the car. Although such flows are inherently unsteady, experimentaland numerical, studies have focused almost entirely upon the steady state (time-averaged) character of theflow. The reliability of these computer predictions has proved to be inconsistent and much of the considerable effort that has been devoted to improve the situation has focused on turbulence modelling of the unsteady nature of the flow with its characteristic low frequency, large scaleunsteadienss. The new generation of solution adaptive codes are able to model unsteadiness but as yet no attempt has been made to validate them for vehicle external flows largely becuase of the absence of appropriate experimental data. In this investigation it is proposed that detailed, time-averaged and unsteady data will be collected using conventional and innovative instrumentation to provide a thorough understanding of the flow physics and to allow detailed, critical validation of the unsteady computational flow prediction codes.
