Summary on Grant Application Form
A series of new podand-type ligands based on the tris (pyrazol-l-yl) borate or tris (pyrazolyl) methane core will be prepared which contain three bi- or ter-dentate chelating arms linked at the apical boron or carbon atom. Such ligands may be prepared with a wide variety of donor sets and cavity sizes. The co-ordination chemistry of these will be investigated with d-block and f-block metals. In particular (i) luminescent polynuclear complexes containing Tb (III) and Eu (III) chromophores will be prepared which may be incorporated into polynuclear species which display long-range inter-component energy transfer; (ii) preparation and evaluation of Gd (III) complexes with a labile co-ordination site capable of rapid solvent exchange, which may therefore be suitable as MRI enhancement agents; (iii) evaluation of long-range co-operative magnetic interactions in tetrameric complexes; (iv) complexation of heavy metal ions (water purification) and clusters.
