Summary on Grant Application Form
We will undertake a novel and far-reaching investigation of the fractal and chaotic nature of a DLA-like process, namely electrochemical deposition. Fractal structures produced in this process resemble those from DLA, and high resolution image analysis will be used to study their multifractal character to further confirm this system. Studying both aspects in detail over a range of the system control parameters will provide a fuller understanding of the processes underlying the random growth. This will be the first detailed investigation of the connection between chaotic dynamics and fractal structures. We will also stabilise the chaotic dynamics by recently developed methods and study the structural consequences. In parallel with these experiments we will implement simulations of DLA on MIMD parallel computers, to undertake the first study of the dynamics of DLA. In these simulations we will fully characterise the chaotic dynamics.
