Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme will investigate the feasibility of combining existing innovative technologies into a small-footprint treatment for in-building recycling of wastewater in large residential accommodation and office buildings. It is assumed that any treatment process will be based on non-chemical methods, ostensibly enhanced biological and membrane processes, due to constraints imposed on the application of chemical dosing.Because of restrictions imposed by the requirement for small-footprint, containable plant the programme will be restricted to studying the following technology options:Biological aerated filter (BAF) or molecular oxygen-dosed membrane bioreactor (MOD-MBR) followed by membrane separation, and;Ultrafiltration (UF)- based MBR.Work will then be conducted on the pilot plant scale on two different wastewater sources. The possibility of further processing of the water by dense membrane permeation (reverse osmosis and nanofiltration) will be explored with the use of CAD packages, standard silt density index water quality measurements and laboratory-scale trials.
