Summary on Grant Application Form |
Four membered rings are unusual in that they do not always display their thermodynamic instability in the reactivity of their ring opening reactions. Azaphosphetidines undergo a rapid base catalysed hydrolysis in water. We propose to identify the factors controlling reactivity and to investigate the mechanism of their reactions using linear free energy relationships, isotope and solvent effects. These derivatives are potentially useful as b-lactamase inhibitors and for catalytic antibody design for synthesising four membered rings.+
