The proposed research will be focused on joint clustering and adaptation schemes for Radial Basis Function (RBF) equalisers to model the inverse characteristics of non-minimum phase mobile communication channels. In the first phase of the project, existing k-means clustering algorithms will be improved to place the centres efficiently. Adjustment of RBF widths will also be incorporated in the clustering algorithm. Interaction of the clustering algorithm with the adjustment of widths will be investigated. In the second phase, algorithms for the fine adjustment of RBF will be developed, Fast Newton and orthogonal projection type optimisation algorithms will be used. Interrelation with the clustering algorithm will be studied. Possible incorporation of underdetermined order Kalman Filters will be considered. Modifications to the structure of the RBF model will be examined. B-spline functions will be employed instead of Gaussian functions. In the last phase, the use of blind equaliser schemes will be studied. The clustering schemes developed in phase one will be augmented with the information provided by such blind structures to reduce bandwidth overhead. The final channel equaliser will be fully evaluated on real data sets, and in hardware, provided by ERA Technology whose involvement throughout the project, as described in the attached letter, will maximise the potential for commercial exploitation.
