Summary on Grant Application Form |
A study of the turbulent boundary-layer structure over a compliant wall surface will be carried out both experimentally and theoretically in order to understand the mechanisms responsible for the reductions of turbulent skin-friction drag and surface-flow noise. Firstly the near-wall flow field will be carefully examined with a laser vibrometer in order to obtain a correlation with the velocity fluctuation. Supplementing these measurements, efforts will be spent on the prediction of the flow field in the near-wall region of the boundary layer through analytical and numerical methods. This will involve a development of a theory for the surface-flow interaction, by modelling the near-wall turbulence activites of the boundary layer. Them optimisation of the compliant coating for the maximum drag and surface-flow noise reductions will also be attempted.
