Summary on Grant Application Form
Scientific programmes need derivatives of functions defined by code, and have produced them for many years by various methods. Features of modern computer languages, Fortran 90 in particular, make it far easier to compute derivatives automatically in a friendly way. We shall build in the existing AD01 package of Cowey/Pryce/Reid, and introduce new facilities:Dr Pryce - to concentrate on functions defined implicitly, and on ODEs.Professor Corliss - to implement, in Fortran 90 Lohner's pioneering method for validated solution of ODEs. This involves conbining interval analysis and AD.Mr Cowey - to implement Fortran 90 intrinsic array facilities in AD01.All - to evaluate different approaches, design data structures, and analyse performance.
