Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is for funding to continue the development of a stand-alone decision support system, which construction contractors will be able to use to construct scenarios to inform their strategic thinking. The business environment for construction firms is highly competitive. In the face of increasing international competition and a cut-throat domestic market, managers must be innovative and be able to perceive, understand and react to early signs of change. Scenario planning has been proven to improve managers' perception and understanding of their business environment. Our system will be based on professionally developed software for casual mapping, known as Graphics COPE. Development follows from a prototype with which preliminary tests have been carried out, but further work is needed so that the system can be used without the aid of an expert facilitator. Research is needed to define more clearly the means of entering a model which has been created by an information provider, and which contains generic data from which company specific scenarios can be built. The model is an 'industry futures bulletin' which contains information drawn from multiple sources, which previous research with contractors identified as being both important and useful in informing their stategic thinking.
