Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will examine airflow induction by water flowing in building drainage systems when the water is dosed with detergent. The work will examine the interaction between typically dosed waste water and drainage systems by investigating water velocity profiles and the nature of the air/water interface, which is the driving force behind air movement. The role of detergent-laden water films obscuring branch inlets and acting as transient attenuators will be reassessed. Practical work will cover laboratory based and live systems, utilising measurement techniques developed for previous SERC grants (GR/F24863 & GR/H91367). Geographical and physical factors affecting detergency, ie regional water carbonate hardness, heat, fat emulsions, will be investigated. Detergent types and domestic/industrial use patterns will be assessed. A mathematical model based on finite difference techniques which accurately predicts dosed water system performance will be created and incorporated into an existing model, enabling accurate simulation of typical live system response sensitive to different usage patterns and circumstances. The product may then be used as a design tool and as a means of investigating the effects of new standards proposals.
