The study of driven plasmas is of both great intrinsic and technological interest. The challenge of understanding the complex interplay of plasma, atomic, molecular and chemical processes that is inherent in the study of such plasma physics community has come together to allow a range of experimental diagnostic and commuter modelling techniques to be used to explore the mechanisms which both initiate and sustain discharges and also produce technologically desirable conditions and species. One main theme is the understanding of energy and particle transport plasma sheaths and how the sheaths change and effect the bulk plasma physics and chemistry. The other is the character and make up of the sheath and glow region and their sensitivity to the particular gas species used, in particular the identification and characterisation of the ionic and neutral species. This knowledge can be exploited to enhance efficiency, produce new sources and processes and provide effective process control.
