Summary on Grant Application Form
Cancellous bone is highly porous and found mainly at the end of long bones. Bone loss associated with osteoporosis is very marked in the cancellous areas and hence fractures in the elderly occur more frequently in them. Unlike established densitometric techniques, ultrasound has been shown to give information on the structural properties of cancellous bone which are important in defining its mechanical competence. At the present time we do not understand fully what aspects of structure ultrasound is sensitive to. Knowledge of this will allow us to suggest improvements to commercial ultrsound systems and so increase their efficiency in detecting those at risk of fracture. We propose using Biot and Transmission Line Modelling (TLM) to produce a quantified and experimentally validated theoretical model of the interaction of ultrsound waves within cancellous bone. This will allow us to vary, in a controlled manner, the structural properties of the models and assess their effect on ultrsonic attenuation and velocity which are key parameters measured in the clinical situation.
