Summary on Grant Application Form |
The energy density of supercapacitors is reaching the point where they can be considered for use as the energy storage element in hybrid vehicle propulsion systems, in place of electrochemical batteries. In this proposal, the combination of capacitor and drive motor, forming an integrated drive unit, will be investigated with the aim of reducing weight, energy consumption, pollution and maintenance costs. Integration with a clean, low level, constant primary power source, such as a fuel cell, will result in a range of hybrid vehicles with electric vehicle performance, clean operation and unrestricted range.
