It is proposed to develop a novel double intermolecular Diels-Alder reaction of azadienes with alkynes as a route to bipyridines. The scope of the reaction as a route to annelated bipyridienes will be investigated, and it will be extended to the synthesis of a range of chiral bipyridienes as potential ligands for asymmetric synthesis. The double intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction will also be used in the synthesis of the polycyclic marine natural product eilatin. Finally the use for the novel chiral bipyridienes in asymmetric hydrosilylation, cyclopropanation and diethylzinc addition reactions will be studied.
