The purpose of this proposal is to carry out an experimental and theoretical investigation of the effects of suction on the behaviour of reconstituted unsaturatd soils. In order to do this it will be necessary to independantly monitor and control the total stresses and the soil suction over a wider range than has previously been possible. To do this a new traxial stress path apparatus will be built. The new apparatus will incorporate state-of-the-art technology relating to suction control and measurement that has already been developed by the applicant with the aid of research grants from EPSRC and the Transport Research Laboratory.The results from the testing programme will be examined within the context of a constitutive model for unsaturated soils and used to assist in the numerical analysis of unsaturated natural deposits.The proposed research should lead to (1) a better understanding of the behaviour of unsaturated soils, (ii) more appropriate testing techniques than are presently adopted, (iii) improved modelling capabilities and (iv) more rational design methods. The work will be complementary to research being performed at the University of Oxford on compacted soils and at the University of Barcelona on the constitutive modelling.
