Summary on Grant Application Form
Turbochargers are finding increasing application to automotive diesel engines as cost-effective means for improving their power output and efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions; these requirements have led to the need for highly loaded turbocharger turbines. This proposal evaluates various designs of mixed-flow turbines in terms of their ability to make better use of the energy of the exhaust stream. Compared to radical turbines, mixed-flow turbine designs seem to offer significant advantages by shifting the peak isentropic efficiency towards higher expansion ratios, where the exhaust gas energy is concentrated, and by giving rise to a flatter efficiency curve. This proposal examines thoroughly the pulsating flow characteristics of a number of mixed-flow turbines by a combination of laser velocimetry measurements and computational fluid dynamics. The end result will be an advanced design of a mixed-flow turbine offering superior turbocharger/engine matching for automotive applications.
