Summary on Grant Application Form |
Accurate microscopic information on driver behaviour is essential to understanding the mechanisms that effect capacity and safety on interurban roads. This award will enable the design, construction and use of an instrumented vehicle for the collection of such information for the study of flow breakdown on motorways. The specification has been identified in a SERC scoping study, and the development of the instrumented vehicle will provide a unique tool which will be able to provide data to the wider UK transport community for use in simulation and in other models. The necessarily high measurement accuracies will be achieved for this monitoring of both drivers of the test vehicle and adjacent vehicles. The close following/overtaking decision process which can be measured in this way will provide a particularly relevant basis for the independent study of many potential and proposed RTI devices. Developments within the Defence and Automobile Industry have now allowed the required technology to become available to a wider market, with a corresponding reduction in cost.
