Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will cover the growth, basic science and applications of antimonide based semiconductor heterostructures. We will continue to develop our studies of the growth of antimonides using MOVPE, including the use of new in-situ diagnostic techniques such as UV absorption, and Reflectance Difference Spectroscopy (RDS). There will also be a wide ranging programme of basic science projects aimed at studying the importance of interface structure on the basic electronic, optical and structural properties of these systems. This will include studies of Raman scattering, vertical and lateral transport and magnetotransport, infrared optical and cycltron resonance absorption. There will be a strong programme aimed at studying the importance of electron-hole interactions, both through excitonic ( Coulomb ) interactions and direct band mixing where the electrons and holes become degenerate. These will also be studied using both transport, infrared and light scattering. We will run a programme aimed at producing prototype midinfrared detectors and emitters, and optimising the structures grown to achieve a wider wavelength range and good emission characteristics.
