Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is concerned with the analysis of problems of thermo-elasticity in a three-dimensional structure consisting of a set of thin cylindrical cells. It includes the study of a single cylindrical cell with a nonconvex cross-section and then homogenization to obtain information about the whole structure. These problems arise at the design stage of a mult-channel ceramic reactor. For a material with effective elastic and temperature moduli we aim to analyze the influence of small defects represented by micro-cracks or hot spots of the temperature. We anticipate that the modelling techniques developed will be of great value to industrialists as they consider the geometric size and shape of particular materials for multichannel catalyst support structures. Some of the conclusions for the particular shapes and materials studied in this project will also be of direct value to industry.
