Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research proposal is concerned with the management of 'datagram-style' traffic being carried on an Asynchronous Transfer Mode Local Area Network (ATM LAN). ATM is a technology that provides services based on the use of connections. For each connection, the network is normally provided with information concerning the network resources that are required to service the connection. Current computer operating systems will not, in general, provide this information. Investigations and tests are being made of management methods by which an ATM LAN estimates available resources and uses this information to regulate the flow of computer data traffic. A rig consisting of six small ATM switches with attached hosts and test cell-generators will be constructed. This will be used to test whether datagram-style traffic can be regulated to minimise cell loss during periods of potential congestion and hence avoid the disturbance caused by cell loss leading to packet loss.
