Summary on Grant Application Form |
There are three aspects to the programme:1. From the start Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) will provide individual partners with state-of-the-art ABS bonding sputtering TiA1N coatings for them to evaluate their performances in relation to the partners' product using existing commercially available coatings as a benchmark. SHU will also provide partners with an initial version of TiA1NbN coatings from the start for evaluations and comparison by the partners against non-multilayer coatings.2. SHU will develop multilayer technology based upon fundamental considerations and the feedback obtained from the partners' field trials. This work will have two objectives: (i) optimisation of the multilayered structure through optimisation of the structures periodically and composition in relation to the cathodic arc target composition (Nb/Ta/W content) and (ii) the development of a graded interfacial structure by either a cathodic etch pre-treatment using multi-ionised metal atoms or by introducing corrosion resistant intermediate barrier layers such as Ta and Nb.3. The use of the graded interface and intermediate barriers during coating formation will be related specific industrial application. This will involve partners using their own testing facilities. Any failures encountered will be jointly investigated by the partners and SHU, using their surface analytical facilities, over the full programme life.
