Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research is to develop a comprehensive theory of reliable and efficient a posteriori error control for adaptive finite element and finite volume approximations of hyperbolic problems. The bounds on the discretisation error in W-1,q will be expressed in terms of the Lq norms of the computable finite element residual. Using tools from harmonic analysis and microlocal analysis of hyperbolic operators, we shall study the connection between dispersion and error transmission. Both linear and nonlinear hyperbolic systems will be considered. The research will lead to powerful numerical methods with attractive stability and accurate properties, supported by rigorous mathematical analysis. In conjunction with reliable a posteriori error control and adaptivity, these will enable computational simulations with guaranteed accuracy, without excessive computing resources. This will have significant impact on design methods in the engineering community.
