Summary on Grant Application Form
Organic chemistry is usually conducted in organic solvents. This poses problems of waste disposal for chemical industry. One of the most rapidily developing areas of organic chemistry is the chemistry of free radicals. Free radical reactions very frequently need not only to employ organic solvents, but also tin reagents which are very toxic; this has meant that radical chemistry has not been widely employed in industry despite many very attractive features. This proposl seeks to build on discoveries made in Britain [in this research group] by developing the free radical chemistry using water as solvent. The proposed research also avoids toxic tin reagents. It uses diazonium salts as the source of free radicals, and novel electron transfer agents as intriguing catalysts. Water is the ideal solvent for the proposed chemistry since it is extremely inert to radical reactions. A further advantage of the proposal is that, in general, separation of products (lipophilic) from starting materials (diazonium salts) should be facile and not require organic solvents.
