Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have recently developed a new method of measuring multicomponent gas adsorption isotherms. The method uses a micro-adsorption plant. The variables we measure are effluent compositon and effluent flowrate, both as differentials and for small perturbations of the gas flowing into a packed bed. For binary systems (as opposed to multicomponent) the method is capable of high precision and should enable the partial differential coefficients of the binary gas adsorption isotherms to be measured. These tell you how the adsorption of one component interferes with the asorption of the other. These partial differential coefficients are of use in developing and testing adsorption theories. They are also relevant in describing reactions in porous catalysis. Improved theories of adsorption are required because current theories are inadequate for confident industrial scale design. The industrial separation of gases is important in manufacture and pollution abatement.
