Summary on Grant Application Form |
Self-excited lateral, or bending, vibrations in the bottom hole assembly of vertical rotating drill shafts cause tens of millions of dollars' worth of damage each year to the oil industry. These vibrations are fundamentally nonlinear and are hard to control as they occur deep underground. The proposed research is to work on an extension to a previous over-simplied model which has been shown to feature complex dynamics. The overall aims are to understand the principal mechanisms causing laterial vibrations, to simulate what is observed and to propose design criteria and operational strategies for preventing or minimising the effects of these vibrations.
