Summary on Grant Application Form |
Design semiology is that aspect of product design in which the nature of form 'automatically' expresses functional capability through symbolic associations. Product configuration should direct users into the mode and method of use, handling, storage, maintenance as well as expressing quality and value through the nature of materials, surfaces and applied finishes. These issues are often qualitative and complex but vitally important to success in competitive global markets. The proposed research is directed towards (a) examining consumer perceptions of IT products in terms of exterior form (b) exploring hierarchies or priorities inherent in product forms (c) identifying ways in which these can be manipulated and controlled as part of the design activity. The research will investigate the cognitive aspects of user perceptions for a range of existing products. Hypotheses derived from this will then be tested by further experimentation with specialised models and modified products.Approaches for formulating the resulting data and information to be of direct use in design will be investigated as a basis for the creative interpretation of semantic criteria in new product development.
