Summary on Grant Application Form
Preliminary studies have led to the identification of a new class of chiral phosphine for use in catalytic asymmetric reactions, The ligand operates via the generation of an asymmetric environment provided by a conformationally rigid array of aromatic rings, a principle which operates in many other highly successful chiral ligands. Synthetic approaches to several classes of the ligands have been established and promising results have been obtained in preliminary studies of their application to asymmetric catalysis. These results are described in the case for support. The exact ligands to be employed in this project contain a conformationally rigid phosphine donor unit linked to a second phosphine which may be varied electronically and sterically. This will allow fine tuning of the ligand to each of the six potential applications. The two most successful applications will be selected for projects leading to the synthesis of target molecules.
