Summary on Grant Application Form
The optimum procedures for catalytic organic synthesis are conventionally discovered by trial and error, which is time-consuming. For the particular case of asymmetric catalysis this implies either experiments with a number of ligand-metal complexes, or with variation of solvent and reaction conditions, or both. The proposal suggests ways in which this process can be facilitated, with the further potential advantage that homogeneous catalysts are replaced by polymer-supported analogues. In two distinct series, it is proposed that a number of structurally related catalysts can be prepared using the methods of combinatorial chemistry, in a multistep synthesis. In this way a moderate number [10-10] of ligands supported on polymer beads bearing identifying tags can be synthesised, and reacted with an appropriate metal complex to produce the catalyst precursor. Methods for the simultaneous assay of several catalytic transformations will be developed, as discussed herein.
