Summary on Grant Application Form
A greatly improved facility for ultrafast photoluminescence will be constructed around a Ti-sapphire laser and optical parametric oscillator. This will permit novel dynamicla studies of excitons in GaAs and II-Vi quantum wells and dots of relavance to optoelectronic applications. A study will begin of self organising quantum wells based on organic molecules and Po12, which naturally segregate into sheets of linked units of Po14, giving quantu,m confinement. This system will be studied for the first fime by ultrafast techniques, and efforts will be made to ascertain how to improve quantum yeild: this will permit modifications to be made to electroluminescent devices base on these materials. Further work will be undertaken o organic materials, viz porphyrins, HITCI and PPV-based semi conductors to assess properties related to device applications. We will extend our preset ultrafast data on PPV and its derivatives, and expect that the new tunability will enable definitive identifiaction of fundamental excitations in these material.
