Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal exploits the idea that learning can be facilitated by providing learners with access to the experiences of other learners. We call this vicarious learning, and we believe it to be a paradigm that offers particular promise when seen as an innovative way of exploiting recent technical advances in multimedia and distance learning technologies. The main objectives are to develop techniques based on the use of high-speed networks, to facilitate learners access to dialogues and discussions which have arisen when other learners were faced with similar issues or problems. This requires us to: (a) identify the best ways of using available NMA technology, and the most urgently needed further developments of the technology; (b) investigate improved means of indexing and retrieving appropriate dialogues, including multimedia; and (c) build on these to create an advanced prototype system for use in schools, industrial training and higher education. The research plan involves the iterative development of a demonstrator system, trialed on BT's education and training testbed, and a parallel series of experiments which will aim to provide a theoretical basis [to be completed]
