Summary on Grant Application Form |
Zwitterion molecules with exceptionally large optical non-linearities are to be covalently bonded in a range of host matrices. Polymeric media will be produced showing superior properties to non-linear optical polymers currently used in devices. Progressing through meso-scopic scale hosts by bonding to dendrimer cores, a final aim is to synthesise a microscopic guest-host system where each zwitterion is buried in a calizarene bowl molecule. The oxygen-sensitive neck of the guest will be protected and the host will be suitable functionalised such that monolayer crystals can be formed. The application areas targeted are telecommunications, information technology and sensing.
