Summary on Grant Application Form
Previous work on Finite Element Modelling of hot rolling shows strong dependence of the through-thickness microstructural gradient upon roll bite geometry. This project will consist of a systematic study of the influence of geometry, and an assessment of its relative importance compared with the boundary conditions of friction and heat transfer. A series of hot rolling experiments will be carried out on a 5000 series aluminium alloy, using an upgraded laboratory mill, logging temperature, roll speed and load to a PC based data acquisition set-up. Variations in geometry will be achieved by the use of different roll radii, initial thickness, and reductions. In addition, the effect of temperature gradient will be examined by changes in rolling speed, and the effect of friction boundary condition assessed by comparison of lubricated and unlubricated slabs. Measurements of the development of microstructure by static recrystallisation will be made at different positions through the thickness. The resulting microstructural gradients will be compared with those predicted using the ABAQUS Finite Element package, combined with the available models for the dependence of recrystallisation kinetics on deformation conditions. This approach is anticipated to give valuable information regarding prediction of microstructure in the complex conditions experienced in hot rolling.
