Various new polymers will be synthesised for a variety of applications. New efficient routes will be developed to cyclic polymers, polyrotaxanes, and polymeric catananes. In situ ring-opening polymerisation of the cyclics will provide an attractive method for applying surface coatings. The polyrotaxanes similarly have potential as precursor polymers. A new short route to star and dendrimer polyesters will be developed. The products have potential applications in drug delivery systems. Polymeric Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films with (a) excellent SHG characteristics will be prepared for applications in optoelectronic devices and (b) recognition properties for applications as sensors. A new type of polymer (a redox precursor polymer) will be synthesised which is water-soluble in the reduced form but insoluble in the oxidized form. It has potential applications as a coating or as an electrochromic polymer. A novel precursor route to polymers with extended .......-electron systems will be developed. The products could have applications in, for example, electroluminescent displays.
