Summary on Grant Application Form
Using ATM technology, we aim to research the design constraints and develop a prototype for a real-time, networked parallel digital signal processor and the services to support it in a distributed system to address audio and music-related tasks.Such services underlie a vast range of applications from distance music teaching to a distributed orchestra, and single user interactive composition to a distributed recording studio, but are clearly distinguished by their demands from the more widely investigated multi-party audio applications such as audio conferencing. The research will investigate the programming, network and synchronization issues raised in this application domain; solutions will be exercised by demonstration applications and evaluated by trained musicians.
