Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research addresses a number of areas where image analysis will clarify the behaviour under an applied field of a range of advanced magnetic materials relevant to magnetic information storage. The images themselves will be transmission electron micrographs showing magnetisation reversal in magnetic thin films of the kind used for data storage (hard discs, etc) and as sensor elements in magnetic read heads. In all cases to be considered there is a need to develop novel statistical theory, models or methodology. Analysis of the propagation of magnetic domain walls will involve stochastic-geometry models and associated inference techniques. In the case of magnetisation ripple, the images show directional textures that are open to modelling using variations of (possibly causal) Markov Random Field models. The spatial and Fourier characteristics of such processes will be investigated and related to the data from the images.
