Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to develop micromagnetic models of longitudinal metal films and Metal Evaporated Tape (MET). The thin film model will have discretisation at the sub-grain level, with a microstructure produced using a Voronoi construction, allowing a realistic study of grain size effects in the materials. In the case of MET we are primarily interested in the micromagnetics of single columns, whose behaviour is not well understood due to their complex microstructure. Thus we aim to study the magnetic behaviour and Neutron Depolarisation of the columns which provides information on local correlation rather than recording behaviour which requires a larger scale, coarse grained model. The longitudinal metal film model will be used in a study of interaction effects in relation to the microstructure, principally via the use of remanence curves.
