Summary on Grant Application Form |
The interior of the knee joint will be recreated numerically in a computer. Using appropriate computer graphics based on digitised physical models the virtual environment will be used for training specific surgical skills. Electromagnetic sensors will provide information about the position of the lower leg relative to a fixed frame of reference in the thigh as a shell based physical model of the knee is flexed/extended and abducted/adducted to open up the joint. The graphics display screen is supported by a multimedia instructional screen to guide the operator through the different manoeuvres. The dynamics of the knee joint is based on a modified four bar mathematical model of the cruciate ligaments combined with a vectorial representation of the collateral ligaments. Movement of the patella is provided by a simple gliding model. Deformability of the connective tissues and menisci will be represented by pragmatic constitutive equations. Visual cues are based on variable distance reflectivity algorithms and Gouraud shading techniques. Movement of the arthroscope and articulating surfaces then provides an interactive dynamic simulation of the video images captured by a real arthroscope supported by a multimedia instructional screen.
