Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the research is to improve the quality of multimedia systems for remote attendance at conferences, workshops and lectures, such as those being used experimentally over the multicast backbone of the Internet. With current technology, not only is the video jerky, but overhead transparencies cannot be read or seen in full because of poor camera resolution. Increasing the frame rate of resolution leads to unacceptably high bit rates and consequent delays over an already congested network. It is proposed to improve the quality through the use of advanced VBR model-based video data-compression techniques and the selective use of higher-resolution multimedia displays. The novel features of this work are (i) the development of a switched model-based coding (MBC) system for this application; (ii) the packetised transport of the MBC data and (iii) the use of embedded higher resolution for OHT material. The proposal is complementary to that being put forward by Adrian Clark of this Department and Jon Crowcroft of UCL. It has been formulated as a low-cost programme making extensive use of existing multimedia equipment.
