Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of this research is to undertake a detailed and comparative study between advanced metal particle pigments and corresponding barium ferrite systems. A full range of measurements will be made to determine the basic properties of the materials in pigment and tape form and to determine the effects of texture and interactions on the bulk behaviour of the media. These latter two topics are to be studied using techniques developed in the recent past at UCNW. Due to the very small size of advanced pigment systems the effects of time dependence are becoming increasingly significant and the principle objective of the work is to study time dependence effects in this range of materials including the seep-rate dependence of the coercivity and state of the art pulsed filed measurements with pulsed durations down to the order of 1 nano second. From these studies it is anticipated that the detail of switching at very high rates can be determined.Additionally, through a collaboration between 2 institutions it is intended to measure the effects of out of plane orientation of the particles easy axes on their magnetic and switching properties. This later topic of study will enable us to compare the bulk properties with the recording performance which will be examined by a collaborating commercial company.
