Colossal Magnetoresistance (CMR) corresponding to hundred-fold resistance changes at large magnetic fields has recently been demonstrated in manganite compounds. While the underlying mechanisms of the CMR phenomenon, and routes for its optimisation are still very unclear, early empirical findings indicate that it is strongly dependent on composition, oxygen and microstructure. This project aims to secure a development base of the future manufacturing of devices based on CMR materials. A strong emphasis shall be put on the application of materials science to property optimisation for specific device applications. The novel value of our programme lies in the use of special materials processing and characterisation techniques such as thermochemical annealing and Raman microscopy. These methods combined with more conventional characterisation techniques will allow a more complete understanding of the processing-property relations. The thin film device development will build on current expertise in the processing of multilayer metal/oxide structures for the fabrication of multilevel heterostructures. IC and Cambridge bring together strengths in material chemistry, physical characterisation, and device fabrication which are key for exploitation of these complex perovskites.
