Summary on Grant Application Form |
Existing specifications for thermal comfort in built environments are coming under increased criticism for failing to consider requirements of specific populations. People with physical disabilities are an example of one such population, where there is little existing knowledge about how their requirements differ from those of `non-disabled' people. For people with physical disabilities to become part of the workforce, and to enable the maintenance of their quality of life in built environments, research is required. The aim of the project is to determine thermal comfort design conditions that will be acceptable to people with physical disabilities. It will be achieved by interview and postal questionnaire surveys of people with physical disabilities, their carers and supporters, thermal comfort experiments in a climatic room and the production of a software tool and method of assessment. Results will be compared with the Fanger comfort model as used in BS EN 27730. A draft international standard will be produced to exploit the results, a mechanism for which the investigators are uniquely placed.
