Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall scientific objective of this programme will be to establish a basic understanding of the correlation between all the deposition process parameters, the DLC microstructure, composition and properties, and the tribological and mechanical behaviour of DLC-coated surfaces. The process variables to be studied will be: source material; precursor; dopants; plasma species; bias mode; bias magnitude; process pressure; and substrate ion current density. Teer Coatings have recently developed a variable magnetron which allows independent control of substrate ion current density, and this is expected to provide a crucial degree of freedom in optimising the process. The basic results obtained will be: the graphite/diamond bond ratio; the amounts of hydrogen, metal and dopant in the film; the film structure and density; the stresses in the coating and substrate; and the effects of various interlayers on these stresses. The above results will be related to the mechanical and tribological properties of the coated surface, such as: critical load; elastic modulus, and friction and wear behaviour, against a variety of counterfaces, and both dry and lubricated.
